Though Metamask is compatible with EVM blockchains like Polygon, it doesn’t have Polygon installed by default. To use MATIC on Metamask, you need to add the polygon network manually:
Steps to Add Polygon to Metamask
Click on “Ethereum Mainnet” at the top left corner of the Metamask dashboard.
Select “Add Network” at the base of the visible pop-up.
Fill in the following details in the columns for “Add a Network”
Network name | Polygon |
Chain ID | 137 |
Block explorer URL | |
New RPC URL |
|
Currency Symbol | MATIC |
Click Save and you’re all set.
You should expect to see a new MATIC wallet in your dashboard with a wallet address that looks like an Ethereum wallet address. This is totally fine as Polygon is EVM compatible.
Steps to Buy MATIC on Metamask
You can purchase MATIC into your Metamask wallet from a decentralized exchange like Pancakeswap, by swapping them with a token you already have. You can also get MATIC by purchasing them directly with your credit card on centralized exchanges.
Buy MATIC on decentralized exchanges
Simply open the exchange you wish to swap from.
Click on the swap or exchange button.
Input your Metamask Polygon wallet address.
Select the currency pair (eg: USDT/MATIC) With USDT as the token you wish to swap and MATIC as the token you want.
Swap.
Buy MATIC on centralized exchanges
While the interface across exchanges may differ, here’s a decent guide to purchasing MATIC on centralized exchanges.
Create an account, or sign in if you already have one.
Add the method of payment (debit card, bank account, wire transfer)
Start trade
Select Polygon from the list of assets
Input purchase amount
Confirm purchase
